Please read these magnesium application instructions in their entirety before beginning your transdermal magnesium regimen. Learning to use THERAMAG magnesium products is easy, but these instructions will help you feel more confident and see results as quickly as possible.

How to Use Topical Magnesium: General Instructions

THERAMAG Magnesium  products are made using 100% edible, ACS/USP Pharmaceutical Grade Magnesium  Chloride with other trace minerals. Apply topically  for rapid absorption of magnesium into the cells. Avoid direct contact  with eyes, mucus membranes and other sensitive areas. If redness or  irritation occurs, rinse with cool water.

Magnesium Oil Application Guide

THERAMAG Magnesium oil provides a quick and efficient restoration of intra-cellular  magnesium levels. Apply magnesium every day to the skin, massage gently & thoroughly. THERAMAG Magnesium oil can be applied prior to bathing providing you wait a minimum of 20 minutes before bathing to receive full and complete absorption of the minerals.

You will be the best judge of how much oil you need a day to find the relief you need. Don’t be afraid to use more, apply gradually as you increase the amount of oil used.

  • A  good starting point is 5 -10 spray actions of magnesium oil. Don't be afraid to use more sprays because you  are looking for the number of sprays that will bring pain relief. Apply  gradually as you increase the amount of oil used. Be sure to gently  massage after each 10 sprays to keep oil from running down.

  • Applying up to 1 oz. of magnesium oil per day is acceptable to help with chronic or severe pain as needed. You  will only do this for a very short period of time and as your magnesium  levels increase you should be able to decrease from an ounce a day.

  • For  best results apply oil to areas of pain first, for conditions such as;
    • Anxiety apply oil on chest area, arm pits (lymph nodes) except on days  you shave. You may apply prior to shaving but waiting 20 minutes letting the oil fully absorb. 
    • Migraines apply at base of neck, temples, forehead and on scalp if needed.
    • Muscle spasms or cramps apply oil to those areas  directly. If you are not experiencing pain apply magnesium oil liberally  to arms, arm pits (except soon after shaving), shoulders, chest, legs  to ensure a large enough surface area for absorption. However the oil  can also be applied to the thighs, calves or stomach.

If  you experience some slight skin irritation, dilute oil with 1 part  distilled water to make a 50% concentrated solution. Itching and  tingling is normal when using magnesium chloride and should only last a  few minutes, your skin will get use to the magnesium chloride salts the  more you use it.

Magnesium Gel Application Guide

THERAMAG MAGNESIUM GEL MAXIMUM STRENGTH: Provides excellent relief of symptoms. Apply and massage gel thoroughly onto desired and CLEAN skin areas. Full magnesium absorption occurs after 20 minutes, at which time it may be washed off but is not necessary to do so. You may apply a moisturizer to that area after full absorption of magnesium has occurred.  Magnesium Gel can be reapplied throughout the day if needed.

Please Note: When using THERAMAG magnesium products for the first time, start with a lower dose and gradually increase the amount  so that the skin gets used to it. You may notice a slight tingling or a  sensation of warmth initially at the place of application. This is  normal and an indication that the magnesium is being absorbed into the  skin tissue. A Salt-like mineral residue may remain when the solution  dries, this is normal and varies with the amount of magnesium oil  applied at one time.

If you would like to avoid this mineral  residue, simply apply magnesium oil 20 minutes prior to showering each  day. After 20 minutes, the majority of the magnesium ions will have been  absorbed and you may rinse the solution off during normal showering or  bathing. You may also choose to remove the mineral residue after 20  minutes by wiping the skin with a damp washcloth.

 Magnesium Bath Crystal Application Guide

THERAMAG BATH CRYSTALS offers a healing magnesium foot bath or full tub  bath experience. The bath tub provides an overall relaxing experience with maximum magnesium coverage and uptake. Temperature of the water should be warm approximately  100° - 103° F, but not hot. Hot water causes the skin to eliminate  rather than absorb.

For the first two soakings (foot or tub) use  1/2 cup of magnesium crystals, allowing your body to adjust to the  powerful effects of magnesium chloride.

Dissolve ½ cup of the  magnesium crystals into a warm foot or tub bath and soak for 30 minutes  or longer, preferably 45 minutes for a better uptake of the mineral. On  subsequent foot or tub soaks you may increase bath crystals gradually up  to 2 cups per soaking.

  • Do not use soap or cleansers during the therapeutic soak, follow up with regular cleansing afterwards.
  • Soak 1 – 2 times per week, those with chronic or acute conditions should try to soak 3-4 times per week.
  • 1 cup of magnesium crystals delivers approximately 15g of elemental magnesium into your foot or tub bath.

Magnesium Deodorant Application Guide

Apply THERAMAG  Deodorant daily to CLEAN skin only in order to avoid skin irritation. A little goes a long way! The formula is designed to be applied in small amounts to avoid problems like staining , stickiness or skin irritation to the delicate underarm area.  Start with a few swipes when using our sticks. On those days that challenge our stress levels or after intense activity you may reapply again for added coverage. 

Frequency of Usage

Generally  speaking, THERAMAG magnesium products should be used with intensity during the first 3-6  months in order to ensure proper restoration of cellular magnesium  levels. It is advisable to use THERAMAG OIL, GEL, & BATH CRYSTALS TOGETHER THROUGHOUT THE 3-6 MONTH THERAPEUTIC PROCESS.

  1. It is advisable to begin the first few days of application with modest use and gradually work up to larger amounts.
  2. A 3-6 month period of restoration follows, with daily use at individual therapeutic levels.
  3. After  an initial period of restoration, some users continue at these same  levels, while others back down to using magnesium chloride a few times  per week.

These levels serve only as a general guideline, as everyone has different needs and responds differently to magnesium therapy.


Recommendations  on optimal magnesium intake vary, with recent studies suggesting US RDA  values may be insufficient to maintain good health. This may be  especially true for:

  • Older adults
  • Athletes
  • Those with certain conditions or existing chronic health complications
  • Those with a history of poor dietary choices
  • Women of childbearing age
  • Those experiencing emotional or physical stress, or stress caused by illness, injury or surgery

According  to Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD ND, a highly respected medical authority on the  subject, research over the past 20 years indicates that approximately  300 mg of magnesium is required merely to replace daily losses.

Dr.  Shari Lieberman, Certified Nutrition Specialist, FACN, recommends  500-750 mg of magnesium daily for men and women, and 500-1000 mg for  those suffering from angina or osteoporosis.

One general  rule of thumb is a daily intake of magnesium of approximately 3-4 mg per  pound of body weight. For a 200 lb male, this would equate to 600 mg to  800 mg per day.

Recommended Children Dosages

5 sprays of magnesium chloride oil delivers approximately 70mg of elemental magnesium.

Children 1 to 3 years: 80 mg

Children 4 to 8 years: 130 mg

Children 9 to 13 years: 240 mg

The RDA for magnesium is also expressed in mg/ kg and is roughly 6 mg per kg (2.2lb) of body weight.
